Key Updates in Fundamentals of the Use of Opioids for Pain Management and Prevention, Identification, and Mitigation of Non-medical Use of Prescription Opioids: A REMS-Compliant Continuing Education Program

In order to be considered a completer of this REMS-compliant education, learners must complete three of the following activities in this series: one track of this Sim Center activity, the Holovision activity, and one chapter of the Day in the Life docuseries. Each activity can be found on the RESTORE website.

Along with a didactic portion and an interactive case-based simulation, this enduring activity focuses on safe and effective management of acute and chronic pain, including reducing pain symptoms and improving physical functioning. Participants will learn to prioritize the use of nonpharmacologic and non-opioid pharmacologic treatment options, assess patient-specific risk versus benefit of opioid use, and implement best practices for initiation, titration, and discontinuation of opioid analgesics. Additionally, the program provides guidance on which patients may benefit from referral to a pain specialist.

This five-module virtual preceptorship is designed to strengthen clinician competence in the assessment and management of both acute and chronic pain. Through expert-guided instruction and integrated whiteboard animations, participants will build practical skills in conducting comprehensive pain assessments, developing multimodal treatment plans, and initiating, titrating, and monitoring opioid therapy safely and effectively. The curriculum emphasizes the use of nonpharmacologic and nonopioid therapies, guideline-adherent opioid prescribing, and risk-mitigation strategies.
